A LESSON ON CHOLESTEROL
-- IN HEALTH & IN DISEASE --

A Health Seekers' Request: PLEASE explain  exactly what "cholesterol" is. And please tell us just how it does harm to the body.

CHOLESTEROL -- THE SUBSTANCE

Cholesterol is a pearly, fat-like, steroid alcohol, crystallizing in the form of leaflets or plates from dilute alcohol and found in animal fats and oils. In the healthy organism, cholesterol is found in bile, blood, brain tissue, myelin sheaths of nerve fibers, the liver, kidneys, and adrenal glands. In disease, cholesterol constitutes a large part of the most frequently occurring type of gallstones and occurs in atheroma (hardening) of the arteries, in various cysts, and in carcinomatous tissue.

CHOLESTEROL -- ENDOGENOUS & EXOGENOUS

Cholesterol is a naturally occurring, metabolic product of all dietary animal foods. When flesh foods and animal products are eaten, cholesterol from these foods can be absorbed slowly from the gastrointestinal tract into the intestinal lymph. Cholesterol is highly soluble in fat, but it is only slightly soluble in water, and it is capable of forming esters with fatty acids.
The cholesterol formed in the body and by the body is called "endogenous cholesterol." Most of the endogenous cholesterol that circulates in the lipoproteins of the blood plasma is formed by the liver, but all the other cells of the body form at least some cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol which is absorbed each day from the gastrointestinal tract is called "exogenous cholesterol."

CHOLESTEROL -- A FRIEND IN HEALTH!

Cholesterol is necessary to health. It forms a part of every cell membrane in the body and is also found in the membranes of tiny organelles within the cells. 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin is changed into Vitamin D-3 by the action of sunlight. Cholesterol is in the form of cholic acid in the liver. In fact, about 80% of the cholesterol is converted into cholic acid which, in turn, is conjugated with other substances and becomes bile salts. Without cholesterol, digestion and absorption of fats would be very poor, because bile salts are necessary for emulsification of fats and aids them in getting through the mucosa of the gastroin-testinal tract. Cholesterol is used by the adrenal glands to form the adrenocortical hormones. The ovaries use cholesterol to form progesterone and estrogen, and the testes use cholesterol to form testosterone. All these glands form their own sterols which are used in the formation of their hormones, but these glands can also convert cholesterol into these hormones. And an excess of exogenous cholesterol may be a factor in endocrine gland imbalance.
A very important function of cholesterol is that a large amount of it is placed in the skin, especially in the corneum. The cholesterol, in conjunction with other lipids, makes the skin an almost impermeable, protective membrane. Because of cholesterol and other fats, the skin is highly resistant to the absorption of water-soluble substances and also to the action of many chemical agents. Even acids and different solvents cannot penetrate the body because of the ability of the lipids and cholesterol to remain inert in relation to them. In other words, cholesterol keeps poisonous substances from penetrating the body via the skin.
Perhaps one of the most important functions of cholesterol, besides its role in digestion, is its ability to prevent evaporation of water from the skin. We could all very easily dehydrate if we did not have the lipids and cholesterol to prevent the evaporation of water. We would lose 15 to 20 liters of water a day, instead of only 300 to 400 milliliters. I am bringing out the beneficial and essential, physiological functions of cholesterol to show that it is a regular part of all animal structures and functions. Only when it is in the body in excess does cholesterol become detrimental to our health and the "culprit" responsible for our disease!

CHOLESTEROL -- AN ENEMY IN DISEASE!

Now, for the harmful effects of cholesterol in cardiovascular disease. Cholesterol, in itself, of course, is not the actual culprit. The real cause of the damaged arteries is Toxemia, The Second Stage of Disease, after Enervation and ultimately the hardening of the arteries from deposited cholesterol, The Sixth Stage of Disease. When the arterial wall becomes damaged or injured in any way, cholesterol deposits called "atheromatous plaques" are common. Hygienists think that the deposition of cholesterol is a defense mechanism. When the body is flooded with Exogenous Toxins -- irritants such as pepper, salt, spices, alcohol -- and when the body is replete with endogenous toxins, the arterial lining incurs damage. Superimpose this toxic state with an abnormality of lipid metabolism and the fact that atherosclerosis is exacerbated by injury to the arterial wall; and you have the genesis of artherosclerosis, in a nutshell.
It is now common knowledge that artherosclerosis is a disease of the large arteries, in which lipid deposits called "atheromatous plaques" are placed just beneath the lining of the arteries. As the disease progresses, degenerative changes take place in the entire arterial wall. Fibroblasts infiltrate the degenerative areas, and this is the "sclerosis" (the hardening) part of the atherosclerosis. The condition is called, Hygienically, "Induration." See pages 34 -35. This condition is formally termed "The Sixth Stage of Disease." In the latter Stages, calcium often precipitates, within the lipids; the atheromatous plaque becomes calcified. When the arteries become almost as hard as a rock, the disease is then called "arteriosclerosis," or "hardening of the arteries."
It is lamentable that half of all Americans die of arteriosclerosis. Of these, approximately two-thirds of the deaths are caused by thrombosis of 1 or more of the coronary arteries. The remaining one-third die by thrombosis or hemorrhage of vessels in other organs, especially in the brain, kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract, and the limbs.
Physicians and pathologists know little of the cause of arteriosclerosis. In trying to discover the cause, various diets have been fed to laboratory animals. They have found that a very severe form of atherosclerosis can be produced easily in rabbits by simply feeding them large quantities of cholesterol. Rabbits normally eat grasses, which do not contain cholesterol. A rabbit's metabolism is not geared or designed to process cholesterol. (Nor is the human's!) Therefore, the ingested cholesterol precipitates in many areas of the rabbit's body, especially in the liver and in the arterial walls. It is much more difficult to produce atherosclerosis in the dog. Experimenters were able to produce atherosclerosis in dogs, which are carnivores, only after removing the thyroid gland or by inhibiting its activity by a drug called "propylthiouracil." The loss of the thyroid secretion depresses cholesterol utilization, thus allowing much of the ingested cholesterol to be deposited in the arterial walls.

"THE SAD RECIPE FOR HEART DISEASE" --

It is regrettable that experiments are done on helpless animals; but since the experiment has already been done, let it teach us to eat according to our physiological and anatomical constitution. Let us learn to avoid Enervation, The First Stage of Disease, which perverts metabolism and the normal utilization of all natural food stuffs, and which produces Toxemia, The Second Stage of Disease. If both utilization of nutrients and elimination of toxins are impaired, then the latter substances must be deposited somewhere to get them out of circulation to prevent them from further perversion of metabolism and upsetting of homeostasis.
Enervation results in perverted metabolism and produces Toxemia. Toxemia, in turn, causes injury to the walls of arteries, which permits an excess of cholesterol to accumulate in the system. You end up with atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis. Combine all The 10 Energy Robbers, with lots of animal products in the diet; and add several years of this reckless living, mixed with generous portions of high stress and little or no exercise. This sounds like... "The Recipe for Heart Disease!" And it is! Put in the proper ingredients under certain metabolic conditions, let the years simmer on by, and you will produce arteriosclerosis every time! That is, if you want it.
